On Sunday August 9, 2020 at approximately 1256 hours, Officer Jonathan Berger stopped a 2007 silver Toyota Rav 4 on Roseland Avenue for several motor vehicle violations. Further investigation led to the driver being asked to step out of his vehicle to perform several field sobriety tests. The driver, a 46 year old man from West Orange, was subsequently placed under arrest for Driving While Intoxicated. In addition, a search of his vehicle revealed several “crack pipes” containing narcotic residue.
Once in custody, this individual began to act erratically and was extremely uncooperative. He told the officers that he wanted to kill himself. As a result, the West Essex First Aid Squad was summoned to the scene, and the driver was transported to Mountainside Hospital for a psychological evaluation. At the hospital, the driver continued to act violently toward the hospital staff, and he needed to be sedated to keep from harming himself.
The driver was later released on his own recognizance from the hospital and charged with multiple motor vehicle violations including Driving While Intoxicated, Driving While Suspended, and Reckless Driving. He was also charged with Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
(It should be noted that the charges against any individuals are merely allegations and that they are presumed innocent until they either plead guilty or are found guilty in a court of law)
